Private Practice – Steps to Success
Consultation & Mentoring
Starting or growing a private practice – whether part‑time or full‑time – can feel overwhelming. Therapists often search for guidance on how to set up a private practice, how to get referrals, how to manage the business side of therapy and how to feel confident working independently. Whilst there are online forums aplenty which focus on setting up a private practice, many new starters (and seasoned professionals) don’t want to ask a question online for fear of it being seen as silly or obvious. Our private practice consultation and mentoring offers a safe, supportive alternative where every question is welcome.
Our consultation and mentoring for therapists is designed to support counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and other mental health professionals who want to build a successful, sustainable private practice. Our Steps to Success programme offers 1:1 support where no question is silly, no problem too big and where progress happens at your pace, with accountability built in.
Working independently can be one of the most rewarding parts of your career. It can bring a sense of self‑worth, confidence, autonomy and professional growth that is difficult to achieve when working for someone else. If getting started feels too big, too confusing, or simply too lonely, we can help you take those first steps with clarity and confidence.
We offer private practice consultation and mentoring to help you navigate both the familiar and unfamiliar parts of setting up your own practice. From the practical questions therapists often ask, How do I get referrals? Where will I see clients? How do I set my fees? to the business questions that feel less intuitive, Do I need an accountant? What should be on my website? Which social media platforms actually matter? we can guide you. Our aim is to help you avoid the “if only I’d known this earlier” moments and instead feel supported, informed and prepared.
A one‑off consultation or ongoing mentoring relationship can cover a wide range of areas, including:
- Choosing your venue – bricks‑and‑mortar or an online practice
- Setting your fees and ensuring you get paid reliably
- Business guidance for psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors
- Finding and understanding your ideal client
- Advertising your practice – website, SEO, social media, directories
- Formal requirements – data protection, supervision, indemnity insurance
- Developing a sustainable caseload
- Growing your practice over time
These are the exact topics therapists frequently search for when planning or refining their private practice. This service is ideal for:
- Therapists in the early stages of planning a private practice
- Counsellors or psychotherapists wanting to transition from agency or associate work
- Psychologists exploring independent practice
- Practitioners who feel stuck, jaded, or unsure how to grow
- Therapists wanting a “re‑boot” or fresh direction
Whether you’re just beginning to scope out your private practice or you’ve been working independently for a while and need fresh direction, we’d be very happy to support you. Get in touch to explore how consultation or mentoring could help you build a confident, sustainable, and successful private practice.
Clinical Supervision
How I See Supervision
Supervision is one of the most important relationships we have as therapists. I see it as a space where you can show up exactly as you are – thoughtful, curious, uncertain, proud, overwhelmed, inspired – without fear of judgement. The best supervisory relationships are the ones where you can think deeply, laugh freely and occasionally cry when the work touches something close to home.
Supervision with me offers space to:
- Reflect on your client work – a place to slow down and make sense of your therapeutic work
- Explore how your own experiences shape your practice
- Receive constructive, thoughtful feedback
- Work through feelings of stuckness
- Strengthen your confidence and clinical decision‑making
- Consider ethical dilemmas and complex cases
- Support your wellbeing as a practitioner
I believe supervision should be thought‑provoking and gently challenging, offering constructive feedback that helps you move forward when you’re feeling stuck, unsure, or simply ready to grow, helping you to develop with confidence.
It’s also a form of self‑care for therapists. In a profession where confidentiality limits how much we can share elsewhere, supervision becomes the one protected space where your work, your wellbeing and your development can be held together.
My Experience
I completed the STAR (Supervision Training and Recognition) programme at the University of Leicester in 2010. Since then, I’ve supervised a wide range of mental health professionals, both qualified clinicians and trainees, as well as facilitating peer supervision groups.
I receive regular clinical supervision for my own practice and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge through ongoing CPD. This helps me offer supervision that is grounded, ethical and aligned with current best practice.
My offer
I provide clinical supervision for mental health professionals at all stages of their career, including; counsellors, psychotherapists, therapists in private practice, psychologists and trainee mental health professionals. Sessions are a minimum of 30 minutes, with longer appointments available depending on your needs. I don’t offer one‑off or ad‑hoc supervision unless you are already an existing supervisee, as I believe consistency is key to safe and effective supervisory work.
You can choose the format that suits you best:
- Face‑to‑face supervision
- Telephone supervision
- Online supervision via Zoom
- Evening appointments for those needing flexibility
If you’re looking for a supervisory relationship that is supportive, reflective and grounded in genuine care for your development, I’d be happy to talk. You’re welcome to get in touch to discuss what you’re looking for, ask questions, or arrange an initial session to see if we’re a good fit.
